When we started the year 2020 with many new ideas and smart, digital changes, COVID-19 was not on the cards. The development that followed in spring 2020 was certainly an unpleasant surprise for all of us.
Now we have made every effort to hold a safe presence event in August 2021. This KONTEC turned out differently than expected. Despite this, it was able to take place with all its usual components. A résumé.
KONTEC has been on the market for 30 years now with a focus on the disposal of radioactive waste from the operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities and plants. This is a great development which we are continuing in terms of content and technology.
For the small anniversary - the 15th KONTEC - many things were different. Not all changes compared to previous KONTECs are due to the pandemic. KONTEC had set itself the goal to become smarter & more digital for all participants. The date in August, instead of March as usual, was part of the changes due to the pandemic. It is a pity that we were able to offer access to fewer visitors than usual and that fewer participants were able to come due to travel restrictions. But it was also a gain: for the first and probably only time we could use the terrace in front of the halls and also the outdoor terrace with a view of the Elbe. A unique opportunity in summer 2021.
On Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. Mr. Ralf Versemann, Vice Chairman of the KONTEC Program Committee opened KONTEC 2021. Excerpts of the opening speech "In 2021, a total of 6 nuclear power plants are still connected to the grid. They currently feed an average of approx. 10% of the basic energy supply required in Germany into the energy transmission grids with unprecedented security and an availability of well over 90%. At the end of 2022, the last nuclear power plants will be taken off the grid and the operators have long since prepared for this and transformed their power operation organisations into decommissioning organisations. Believe me, this is an ambitious transformation combined with a continuous improvement process. This transformation is also being carried out in parallel on the part of the authorities and experts as well as the industry. Currently, 21 plants in East and West are in the post-operational or decommissioning phase. …
A major challenge awaits at the end of the process chain consisting of decommissioning, dismantling, residue and waste treatment. This is, on the one hand, the release of large quantities of material and, on the other hand, the proper packaging and documentation of the radioactive waste - the goal: to be certified as 'suitable for final storage'. ... The operators intensify their activities and organisations to document the existing waste packages and the packages to be created in the future in such a way that they can be quickly qualified for storage. The same is done on the side of authorities and experts. Currently, 543 waste packages with a final storage volume of 2936m³ are suitable for final disposal, but this speaks for itself.
The fact that we in Germany have built up a much respected competence in the dismantling of power reactor plants is recognised internationally. Now we have to work intensively on managing this dismantling more efficiently, i.e. faster and cheaper. “
Following the opening of the symposium, Dr. Andreas Volz, representing Barbara Becker, from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), gave the welcoming speech for KONTEC 2021. Dr. Volz thanked the organizing team, among others, for the prudent hygiene concept that made the event possible. KONTEC should also be seen as an opportunity, even if some colleagues cannot be present, it still offers the opportunity for exchange and a concentrated meeting.
The FORKA federal programme was republished in the Federal Gazette in June. The programme has settled at around 8 million per year. The evaluation procedure was changed and the FORKA funding programme was evaluated at the beginning of 2021. One of the results was that the application orientation, i.e. the cooperation between research institutions and industrial partners, was positively received by all participants and should be strengthened. The next date in the form of a status seminar is scheduled for November '21.
Since the beginning of this year, the programme for maintaining competence in nuclear safety research, NUKSI for short, has been based at the BMBF. It comprises the areas of radiation research, waste disposal research and reactor safety research and is funded with 14 million EUR per year. Together with FORKA, these 4 areas cover a broad spectrum.
For participants the opening speeches are available at https://www.eventclass.org/contxt_kontec2021/scientific/online-program/session?s=Opening. Access can also be purchased in the KONTEC Shop.
Our new contractual partner in trade fair construction, cubicworx, enabled our exhibitors to use a digital ordering process as well as all-round on-site support. Ticketing was also digitalized - for quick confirmations and to realize a fast check-in. We are very pleased that Dimitri Reimer, a member of the FFA e.V., captured KONTEC on pictures.
Wednesday evening was dedicated to the exhibitors. It was special that the partners of the evening (see sponsors) made the equipment and catering of the terrace in front of the halls possible. KONTEC provided the additional guest service and the background music by the duo LOUNGEWORX.
The banquet on Thursday evening rounded off the social part of KONTEC 2021 and was themed #Sustainability. The clay pots with basil, rosemary and other spices used to decorate the tables could be taken home by the guests afterwards.
At this point we would like to thank again 763 visitors, 90 speakers and 81 exhibitors who have contributed to KONTEC 2019.
We are glad if you were part of the anniversary and thus the 15th KONTEC became something very special again.
For all those who unfortunately could not be present this year, we have created a spontaneous offer. You now have the possibility to get access to the lectures in word and picture for the anniversary price. Take advantage of this unique offer and join KONTEC 2021 retrospectively. The purchase entitles you to online access to the conference documents and videos of KO21 for 4 months from the date of purchase. This way to the offer https://shop.ticketpay.de/OG5F9DJK
